PRACTICE AREAS
languages
José Luis is a partner at ALTA Costa Rica. His practice focuses on criminal law and labor law. In labor matters, he has extensive experience advising companies and litigating matters arising from public and private employment relations.
In criminal matters, he has handled cases of high complexity related to the representation of both victims and defendants in crimes against life and physical integrity, corruption, fraud, document falsifications, crimes against honor, medical malpractice, and environmental crimes, among others. He also defends civil actions for compensation processed in criminal jurisdiction.
As part of his consulting services to companies on matters arising from public and private employment relations, he focuses on drafting employment contracts with special clauses for senior executives and handling dismissal claims against employees who are especially protected by law, such as pregnant or breastfeeding employees. Furthermore, as a litigator, he has represented companies before labor courts and administrative bodies for more than two decades. He has also built a strong track record in collective bargaining matters with unions and other organized groups, and has also represented employers in economic and social collective disputes in court.
In addition to his activities as a litigator, he has taught at universities for over ten years and is the author of numerous articles related to various legal matters published in local and international books and journals.
José Luis is also a journalist, where he has served as spokesperson and public relations for many of our clients when it comes to cases with wide media coverage, in addition to being consulted by different media outlets on current legal issues that are discussed in the various public opinion forums.
