Energy and Environment
The energy and environment team ALTA focuses on the most complex challenges facing the industry now and that will continue to be crucial in the future. We have developed an outstanding reputation within the energy and environmental sector in Central America by working closely with our clients in managing their environmental, health and occupational safety risks at a regional level. We have been involved in public and private transactions in relation to the carbon market, debt-for-nature swaps, emissions reduction certificate transactions in the institutional market.
Our specialists provide sophisticated, high-profile legal and regulatory support to clients across a wide range of businesses including energy, real estate, banking, mining, energy practice and industrial facilities. Our focus is prevention, however, if a problem arises, we have extensive experience handling administrative and judicial proceedings, criminal actions and civil claims and even international investment arbitrations.
We work closely with our clients to reduce their environmental, health and safety risks. If problems arise, we are experienced in handling regulatory proceedings, government enforcement actions, and civil lawsuits. Our practice is designed to advise clients on regulatory compliance and at the same time promote their business strategies in large electricity generation, hydrocarbon marketing and waste management projects. We also help them incorporate the effects of climate change into their risk matrix and adapt with strategies for the use of water resources in drought areas and the modification and protection of civil works due to increased water levels.
We address the full range of issues related to energy regulation, including rate setting and regulatory accounting procedures, in bidding processes, the structuring, development, acquisition, sale, financing, operation and marketing of energy and energy projects.
Our experience in renewable energies is complemented by our knowledge of the hydrocarbon market throughout the region. For years we have advised companies dedicated to the distribution of hydrocarbons in the processes of station installation, relations with government authorities as well as regulatory compliance and tariff procedures with regulatory authorities.
Our team has extensive experience in managing the preparation of Environmental Impact Studies, leading the Environmental Impact Assessment process before local regulatory authorities, participating in the preparation of Watershed Management Plans, auditing and advising on certification processes. ISO 14001 and OSHA 18001, designing water management plans in critical areas of our region and zoning plans for the creation of Private Wildlife Refuges.
For our team, compliance with environmental standards and advice on cleaner production increases competitiveness and means new business opportunities, such as the possibility of developing carbon offset projects in old and new industries.
