ALTA had the honor of participating in The Advocates’ Society 2025 Fall Convention at the Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica, as the only Costa Rican and Central American firm invited to present a case. We shared our pro bono work in the defense of Indigenous peoples’ rights on the panel “The View from Here: Indigenous Land Rights and the Rule of Law in Costa Rica,” where our partner Marvin Carvajal Perez presented, with rigor and humanity, the case of the parents of Jerry Rivera, a young Indigenous man murdered in a territorial dispute, highlighting the challenges to effective judicial protection in the face of the violence these communities endure.
This gathering brought together more than 6,000 judges and litigators in a space of high academic and ethical standards. For Alta, bringing the voice of Costa Rican Indigenous communities to this international forum is both an honor and a responsibility—one that reinforces our commitment to strategic advocacy, in both pro bono matters and our regular practice, to defend rights, open necessary conversations, and contribute to a more just society.
ALTA tuvo el honor de participar en The Advocates’ Society 2025 Fall Convention en el Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica, siendo la única firma costarricense y centroamericana invitada a presentar un caso. Compartimos nuestro trabajo pro bono en la defensa de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas en el panel “The View from Here: Indigenous Land Rights and the Rule of Law in Costa Rica”, donde nuestro socio Marvin Carvajal Perez expuso, con rigor y humanidad, el caso de los padres de Jerry Rivera, joven indígena asesinado en una disputa territorial, resaltando los desafíos de la tutela judicial efectiva ante la violencia que enfrentan estas comunidades.
Este encuentro reunió a más de 6.000 jueces y litigantes en un espacio de alto nivel académico y ético. Para ALTA, llevar la voz de las comunidades indígenas costarricenses a este foro internacional es un honor y una responsabilidad que refuerza nuestro compromiso con brindar servicios legales estratégicos —tanto en casos pro bono como en nuestra práctica regular— para defender derechos, abrir conversaciones necesarias y contribuir a una sociedad más justa.
